Gerry Levene – Farewell to someone really big of the Brumbeat

image-393Last Monday December 19, the singer Gerry Levene passed away at the age of 67 (born Michael John Gibbs, 18.2.1944), an artist who has been one of the main pillars of British Brum Beat movement. During the last years Gerry had been battling with bowel cancer, but finally his death was a result of pancreatic cancer.
In the early '60s he founded the Gerry Levene & The Avengers band, where famous artists from the Birmingham music scene passes through as the drummer Graeme Edge (The Moody Blues), Roy Wood (The Move, ELO, Wizzard), Mike Hopkins (The Diplomats, The Idle Race) and Jim Onslow (The Diplomats, along with Bev Bevan of The Move, ELO and ELO Part II). They was also the first brummie band to play at the mythical The Cavern in Liverpool with The Beatles.
image-394Jim Onslow, your great friend and fellow, remembered him this way: “I first join Gerry’s band in 1961 and we have been like family till his sad passing on Monday night, he was a pop star that never quite had the luck he deserved but together we set the foundations for a lot of other artists. For the past 16 years he has suffered many illnesses but never complained or made a fuss, he would do anything for anybody, always willing to help if he could and has raised thousands for different charities, an all round good guy and will not only be missed by his family and friends but by the music business that he has always been active in. Rest in peace my friend.”

[ELO Secret Messages Blog is deeply grateful to Jim Onslow for his touching words at this sadly time]
